| Recharge Program
The
Nevada Legislature authorized the Las Vegas Valley Groundwater Management
Program (GMP) to establish a permanent artificial recharge program to
help stabilize the water levels in the Las Vegas basin. Since that time,
the GMP has purchased water for permanent recharge and is using two dedicated recharge wells on behalf of the program.
What is permanent artificial recharge?
Permanent artificial recharge is treated Colorado River water that is
injected, using a recharge well, into the groundwater basin for permanent
placement in the basin. If available, up to 5,000 acre feet of water annually
may be purchased by the GMP from the Las Vegas Valley Water District for permanent artificial recharge.
Why is permanent artificial recharge beneficial
to well users?
Through the permanent artificial recharge program, the GMP can help balance
the draw-down of the groundwater basin. By supplementing the valley's natural recharge, well users benefit through:
- More stable groundwater levels
- More efficient groundwater wells that stay in operation longer, run more efficiently
and use less energy
What you can do
Well users can make a difference by voluntarily adhering to SNWA's watering restrictions and participating in one or more of the Southern Nevada Water Authority's conservation programs. Learn more about how to save water and promote a sustainable environment. |
